Not quite amusing enough for my humor tag, but a novel and sincere endorsement.

Incidentally, here’s a recent article in slate.com about the ascendancy and currency of the FAIL meme.

Happy 16th!!

Here’s a shoutout to NYC nephew Austen Reed Saltz, on the occasion of his 16th birthday.   He’s the other blogger in the family, although his frequency has dipped a little lately.   What could be distracting a teenager these days?

Asleep at the Wheel

The texas-swing group is coming to the Orange Blossom Opry next March, and i’ve been wanting to see this group in person for years and years.   I plan to buy got my tickets today!

Tent AC

Tent air conditioningSome have asked about how the tent air conditioning went. The setup was pretty easy; I brought a small plastic table and cut the legs down to about 6 inches for it to sit on. I had to turn my tent backwards and use the large rear window panel for entrance and exit so that I could use the main door with a full corner zipper to place the AC. I placed the table half in and half out, and zipped up and placed a couple of clamps to hold the zippers in place. Then used some duct tape to close remaining gaps.

However, my high end “3-seasons” L.L. Bean tent is engineered for maximum ventilation, with huge mesh side windows and ceiling, all privacy protected by the rain fly. So it doesn’t ‘seal up’. Therefore, the AC couldn’t quite cool it down in sunny mid day, although it did fine on the rainy day and at night. I spent the better part of the rainy afternoon hunkered down watching a marathon session of season one Weeds on DVD.

The AC installation was clearly visible from the roadway and I got a couple of admiring inquiries about it.

The ACORN accusations

I read something important about the ACORN issue.   ACORN is accused of falsifying voter registrations, that is, registering people that don’t exist, or registering people multiple times.   And yes, that has happened, I’m sure.    It’s reported that Mickey Mouse has been registered to vote by ACORN.

This is not the same thing as the federal crime of voter fraud.   Just because there are bogus registrations, doesn’t mean there will be fraudulent votes!   The voters still have to show up, show ID, and then they can only vote once.    And no one will let mickey mouse vote even if he does show up.  With ID.

Big difference, but unfortunately, not in the public’s mind.

ps.  This malfeasance does not mean that ACORN is a corrupt or crooked organization.  It means that ACORN has employed some low-wage personnel that are corrupt.  ACORN has a problem, but it’s a mangement problem, not a character problem.
